PPIs are a class of drugs used to decrease or stop acid production in the stomach. They are prescribed for short term treatment of acid reflux and ulcers.
The long term use caries significant risk factors for:
Increased risk for hip fracture:
1 year of use 22% increase 2 years of use 44% increase 3 years of use 54% increase
4 years of use 59% increase
A 30% increased risk for kidney disease
Increased risk infections: bowel, small intestine and pneumonia There may be an increased risk for dementia.
